A SOMBER POEM PRESERVED FROM THE EARLY WEB

The Unborn Child

Author Unknown

This preserved poem explores pregnancy loss, secrecy, guilt, and grief.

I have broken my vow but not my silence.

I gave up my unborn child to satisfy another.

In the end, I only hurt myself and the child.

I allowed the child to be taken away.

But That haunting still stays strong.

I can not believe that I could ever be so cruel,

As to kill someone I never knew.

My silence is painful through and through.

I didn’t tell him the honest truth.

I told him goodbye and he never knew.

I had a piece of him within that grew.

I thought the pain would go away.

But it left my body and not my mind.

I think about the child every single day.

I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, and I can’t find peace within.

I wonder what would happen if one day I said to him:

“I carried your child for a month I did.

I didn’t tell you because you were so happy.

I didn’t want to be the one who ruined your happiness.

And now I carry the hate you would have for me.

If you knew about the unborn child.”
